Children learn water safety, swim skills for free at BWAC

By Record Patriot Staff | Aug 7, 2025

The Benzie Wellness and Aquatic Center (BWAC) provided free swim skills and water safety lessons for the fifth consecutive summer, partnering with the City of Frankfort at Bellows beach on Crystal Lake. Elementary-school age children from the Benzie Central school district, Frankfort- Elberta school district and home-schooled students participated.

Each swim lesson also included water safety information for the children and their parents.

Program volunteers included Debbie Smith, Beth Major, Steve Walton, Amy Taylor, Pattie Eakin, Bill Brands, Wanda Shreiner and Renee Brittain.

According to students’ families, the program helped to increase their children’s confidence and comfort level in the water, improve their swimming skills, and provide a greater awareness of safety measures near and on the water. Parents also cited healthy exercise and a structured program as program benefits.
